Combating ISIS With Drones

mini quadcopter drone with camera

The United States and Russia want more modern aircraft. But Ukraine does not have the necessary resources to train their soldiers in these types of aircraft. While the Ukrainians do have training on aircraft and vehicles in Western countries like Germany, they are not able to get the same training on drones in Ukraine. Ukrainians are used to using older equipment like trucks, and drones are easier to use for them. Drones are also easy to use for soldiers because they don't need "pilots". Drones can also be used in a similar way to video games.

Aerorozvidka

Ukrainian military employs a unique method to fight ISIS in eastern Ukraine. They use octocopters that are equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime operations. Some drones are fitted with anti-tank weapons and even have the capability to light up columns. These drones can carry up to 11 lbs worth of payload and are extremely maneuverable. Due to their small size, the drones are able to fly low over targets and drop munition.

Aerorozvidka began as an IT enthusiast group. It has since evolved into a military air reconnaissance unit. Aerorozvidka began as a civilian drone company. However, the organization grew to become a fully fledged unit with its own head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Aerorozvidka depends on crowdfunding and donations to keep the company afloat, as many of the drone components are made in the USA.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplies Ukraine with "Switchblade", armed drones that can strike Russian tanks far away. These unmanned aircraft vehicles were created by the US Air Force in response a Ukrainian request. John Kirby from the Pentagon stated that over 121 of these machines were being sent to Ukraine. It is unclear how the Switchblades will work in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The Switchblade is a small drone with a 40-kilometer range. It can be launched from a tube. The Switchblade, unlike Bayraktar drones can strike a Russian convoy up to 6 miles away. In a conflict like Ukraine, these small aircraft can be set up in minutes. The Switchblade's speed is faster than that of the Bayraktar. This is the current U.S. Ally.

Russian kamikaze drones

Recently, the US announced a $800 million military aid package to Ukraine. Part of that package is the delivery of 121 unmanned aircraft, called "Phoenix Ghosts," which are intended to terrorize Russian forces. These aircraft can hover over areas for 30- to 40 minutes and are equipped to carry warheads and cameras. One such drone is the Switchblade, a 5.5-pound hovering munition that can take out armored vehicles and tanks.

These small, light aircrafts come equipped with a powerful, low flight gimbal which allows them to operate from either air, ground, or water. Any advantage that an opponent has in the air battle is crucial in a conflict such as this. The Russian kamikaze drones are a direct threat. This capability is crucial for Ukraine's military because it can easily break Russian sieges, and attack command-and controller nodes. While such capabilities would be a major liability for both sides, if a small drone can make a difference on the battlefield, Ukraine could emerge as the victor.

U.S. loitering drones

Russia is integrating ZALA KYB loitering weapons into its military arsenal. These drones can also use lethal loitering weapons in the same manner as bazookas. These autonomous killing machines may be more common in black markets if loitering drones are used. But experts and observers are worried. So what can America do to stop this happening?

quadcopters drones

Kirby claims that the U.S. government sent more than 121 Switchblade loitering helicopters to Ukraine in order to aid Kiev against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone weighs 5.5 pounds and can hover for up to thirty to forty minutes. It comes with a camera as well as a small warhead. Its mission is to shoot down the opposition forces in Ukraine.
